Why drain blockers are a vital tool in rat control
In the UK there is really only one species of rat that will affect properties. Its scientific name is Rattus norvegicus, but it is also know as the brown rat, common rat, Norway rat or sewer rat.
If you research what proportion of property rat issues stem from the drains, you will find that every article on the subject states that it is a majority.
There is no doubt that the causes of some rat problems in our rural East Devon, West Dorset and South Somerset service area are subterranean in nature. Rats are, after all, sewer rats and will approach a property underground, with all the time in the world to discover any defects or gnaw and dig them out to create an access point.
Drain blockers for rat control are an excellent innovation to prevent your waste outlet from being penetrated. They have a one way valve or in some cases a double flap that allows waste to exit into the sewer, but prevents rodent access.
They vary in price and quality. The cheaper ones can do a job, but tend to have to be jammed in, which is difficult for deeper drains.
We recommend the market leading product from Danish manufacturer Nordisk. It is the only WRC (Water Research Centre - the bench mark within the UK water industry) approved blocker, is made from acid resistant stainless steel, with rust proof sealed welded joints.
Crucially, through the range, there is a minimum 4mm tolerance, which allows for the device to slot into the drain and be mechanically expanded for a tight fit. This is useful for installation at depth, with two metre installation poles that allow for ease of fit and adjustment to size, as well as for removal for servicing, which is recommended annually.
